Abstract
With increasing globalization that human resource (HR) is the ultimate source of firm's competitiveness has been much discussed and proven through literature and practice. Effective management of it has taken up even greater importance and given higher priority particularly in Korean firms as a consequence of the Asian economic crisis. Within the context of Korean firms. this paper attempts to find out how well HR has been managed strategically. whether HR has been managed with internal and external fitness in mind. which is the central focus of Strategic Human Resource Management. and how it should be managed strategically in the future. Based on the survey result of 216 of top 1000 (by sales) firms. it was found that half of the firms are using a hodgepodge approach that mixes Western HRM methods with traditional Korean methods. and though half of the firms lack internal fitness among different functions of HRM. external fitness was found between strategy implementation and organization management. The paper concludes with the future strategic agenda for Korean firms.
