This study analyzed the interplay between economic stabilization policies and plitical democratization in Argentina from 1983 to 1992. The new civil governments tried to end the stop - go cycles in economic policy - making, attempting to manage the transition from the authoritarian to a constitutional regime. The "heterodex shock" packages of Alfonsin government, "Austral Plan", failed to curb the inertial inflation as well to consolidate democratic institutions due to its lack of political support of organized labor and business groups.

The Menem administration, providing reassurances to business sectors with the exclusion of organized labor, has tried to stabilize and restructure the crisis - ridden economy by both privatization of public compamies and radical reduction of public deficits. However, the ultimate outcome of Menem"s "capitalist revolution" will depend on the prospective political viabilty as well as 0 the character of external constraints.
