PRODUCING TOURISM: 〈AIZAU REVIVAL SOCIETY〉AND LOCAL HISTORY AND TRADITION

- Tourism as a socio-cultural phenomenon consists of touristic sites, the producers and consumers of touristic products, and this paper focuses on the side of production. In order for the tourism process to take place, particular images and information about the tourist sites need to be produced and distributed. Analysis of the production of tourism enables us to approach the socio-cultural dynamics involved in the tourism process. For instance, similar touristic resourses can be produced in various ways and thus are attached differing meanings and semiotic images. In addition to this, success or failure of a particular touristic product depends not only on the content of the product but also on the socio-historical context in which it is produced and consumed. Particular cases of touristic production, therefore, provide a very useful means for socio-cultural analysis. Based on these perspectives, this paper examine the case of 〈Aizu Revial Society〉, a group of local merchants in Aizu region of Tohoku Japan which has been fairly successful in producing tourism utilizing local history and tradition.
