Abstract

This study deals with the definition. gods, and rituals of Korean familial folk religion. First of all, to understand the Korean familial folk religion. we need to rethink what familial folk religion (gajeong sinang) is. Korean familial folk religion is found not only inside house but also out side house. Accordingly, we have to pay attention to two phases of Korean familial folk religion: indoor familial folk religion and outdoor familial folk religion. Traditionally, household gods are the nucleus of indoor familial folk religion. The household gods take locations in their own places and function as tutelaries for family. Through the myths of the gods and rituals for the gods. we can find the space sense of house and religious attitudes toward household tranquility. Outdoor familial folk religion is connected with the communal folk religion in the mountainous or riverside village. Indoor familial folk rituals are for household gods, whereas outdoor familial rituals are for mountain gods. dragon gods. and wind gods.
