This paper attempts to show the original meaning of imago dei in 「Genesis」 1:26, which describe the creation of human beings. A key expression is that God made the human in God's own image and likeness. The writer, after surveying early Judeo-Christian scholarship on the concept of imago dei, tries to formulate a definition of humanity on the basis of classical Hebrew philology. Mesopotamian anthropogenic accounts in 「Enuma Elish」 and 「Atra Hasis」 provides concrete meanings about 'image' and 'likeness' in broad Near Eastern context. 'Imago Dei' in Genesis 1:26 is a bold statement that human-being is a God on the earth, bearing imago dei.-
