Abstract
Sluicing is a phenomenon which involves a stand alone wh-phrase whose content is partially determined by context. (1)a. A:Many dissidents have been released. B:Do you know who?
b. A:Is there anyone who could possibly unscrew the hatch? B:Gee, I wish I knew who. c. A:Did anyone show up for class today? B:Yup. A:Really? B:Yeah. A:Who?
In these examples, each of the reduced questions contains a single wh-phrase. However, similar examples with more than one wh-remnants are also possible.
