'뵙다'류 동사의 형태음운론

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to clarify the paradigm of Korean verb 'pö:p-(humbly meets)'. There is another verb 'pöop-' which has the same meaning but it is not widely used as 'pö:p-' in modern Korean.

We collected data from the modem Korean corpus which has 10 million words. It was found from the results that 'pö:p-' has paradigm of /pö:pt'a, PöΛ, pö:n/ and 'pöop-' has /pöopt'a, pöwa, pöon/. These paradigms show a new alternation pattern where stem final 'p' is deleted before a vowel.

We see from the following how this new pattern emerged. ('!' means irregular verbs, Ɔ is used for transcription 'ϙ' and z for 'ʌ'. poiop-!(A) and poiop-!(B) has the same basic form but different alternation type.)

poizƆp- > poiƆp-! > poiop.!(A) > poiop-! (B) > pö:p-!

This new alternation type is the result of restructuring from the historical point of view.
