Abstract

This study aims to analyze the space-image of a spa which was settled to a systematic space for leisure and to search how the image was represented in modern korean novels. A spa accepted to the space for cure and recuperation is reorganized to the resort for leisure and enjoyment so represents the eros-modernity which gets over the ordinary moral in modern society. In the modern korean novels(specially in Yi, Kwang-su"s novels) written in the age of colony, a spa was described to a depraved space where make a new woman degraded. Because of a man"s desire for watching a woman"s naked body, the woman in a spa was degraded. And In 〈Kwangbun〉 and 〈An incense fire of the devil city〉, she frightened and destroyed a innocent man, so a spa was described to the space in where a crime was planed and practiced. The popular stories in the age of colony made a formula that described a spa as a showcase of degraded sexuality because the common people could not approach to a spa so only the colonizer could regard a spa as a aesthetic scenery in that times. Yi, Hyo-seok described Ju-el spa both as a aesthetic cultural space for enjoying european taste and as a erotic primitive space for desire. So he shows a cross vision for the spa. But most writers described a spa not as a aesthetic scenery but a space crossing the brilliant bourgeois" consuming culture and the desperate people"s alienation.
