Histopathological changes of otitis media was
studied in various animal models and human. Purulent
otitis media was produced in chinchillas by
inoculation of pneumococci into the hulla, and middle
ear effusion was developed in chinchillas and cats by
obstruction of the Eustachian tube with sterile silastic
sponge. Natural otitis media in guinea pigs was
studied from a pathological point of view. In a
human otitis media study, 800 temporal bone collection
and 200 surgical specimen were reviewed. These
findings were correlated and interpreted in longitudinal
and parallel studies. In animal and human
study, otitis media was classified as purulent otitis
media(POM), serous otitis media (SOM), mucoid
otitis media(MOM), and chronic otitis media with the
continuum or interrelated changes of various groups.
