Abstract
In this paper, I attempt to reinterpret "Patriotic Enlightenment Movement" during Japan"s Protectorate Rule in Korea (1905-1910) as an enlightenment reform movement and intricate product of global diffusion, including the 18th century European liberalism and other translated and mediated Western influences, with its ambiguous political implications between nationalism and colonialism. Both theory and practice of the movement was under Euro-American and Japanese hegemony, but at the same time, diverse discursive tactics were adopted to appropriate it.

My aim is to map out a historical structure of knowledge diffusion and examine its political role in the case of early modern Korea. Accordingly, I review the main political controversies between constitutional monarchy vs. republic and cultural reform movement vs. anti-imperial fighting with an international and regional perspective. I am particularly interested in the transformation of elites and their changing relations to the state and society before annexation of Korea by Japan.
