dc.description.abstractThis study set out to shed new light onto printing artisans as one of the subjects to publish books by focusing on the history of publication culture during Chosun Dynasty. The main focus was placed on Gyunjajangs(均字匠) to set up a basic framework for researches on artisans in the history of book printing. Gyunjajangs can be characterized by the ability to tell letterpress printing from block printing and the responsibility for typesetting, which is one of the core tasks in letterpress printing.

In Chosun, a good number of artisans with different skills were put to the many different processes of publishing a book. Investigated in the study were the staff organization, scope, procurement methods and types of letterpress printing artisans. And furthermore the roles, values, and documented lists of Gyunjajangs were also examined.
