치카노/나 종교적 담론의 사회문화적 의미

Abstract

This study purposes to examine various articulations about Chicano/a religiosity or spirituality in cultural, theological and literary realms. For Chicano/a, the issue of spirituality or religiosity presumable involves a complex matrix of identity, culture, gender and race. Thus, it is important to recognize that Chicano/a's commitment to appreciating or contesting religious culture is inseparably connected to the process of formation of identity. It has become a generously accepted reality that official Catholicism has failed to acknowledge their own cultural knowledge, female sensibilities and sense of justice. This Catholicism's failure has allowed Chicano/a to develop a language of defiance and resistance especially by means of the reassessment of popular religiosity and Virgin of Guadalupe. Combining with indigenous tradition and Mesoamerican philosophy, Chicano/a authors and academics seek to appropriate contemporary theorlogical strands such as liberation theology and Latino theology. Chicano/a engagement in developing religious subjectivity in terms of theology is deeply interrelated with the negotiation with the issues of 'otherness' and 'mestizaje', which have imbued them with social, cultural and spiritual marginalization. They attempt to elaborate the significance of their ethnical and racial 'difference' by way of the reinterpretation of ecclesiastical meaning of these concepts, which lead the reader to reappreciate their ontological 'difference'.
