Postwar Argentina has characteristically shown chronic political and economic instability and the reversal of development. This path of national development is extremely contrasting with that of prewar Argentina when the country was one of the most promising ones in the word. How and why has this dramatic reversal of development occurred? There have been a number of attempts to explain this phenomenon, mainly in terms of political and economic variables. This paper tries to complement existing academic endeavours by adopting a cultural perspective, that is, focusing on cultural variables on economic performance. The main argument of this paper is that it is the cultural legacy of Peronism which is accountable for the Argentine riddle. This argument is composed of five interrelated propositions about the role and consequences of Peronism.-
