Abstract
The preliminary investigation described in this paper suggests that the
MDL-based, coding-theoretic approach seems applicable for comparing
among qualitative models, thereby extending the previous application of
MDL for quantitative models. Obviously, much further work is needed
before the approach becomes fully functional. For instance, the approach
should be able to deal with non-binary decision tree models but also nonbinary
data, even models that cannot be expressed in decision trees, and
finally, large data sets. This and other relevant issues are currently under
investigation.
