Abstract
This study investigates the four skills (listening, reading, wntmg, and speaking) in

terms of discourse processing in order to provide desirable directions for discourse-based

language teaching. For this twofold (both conceptual and practical) study, a theoretical

analysis of the four skills is made on the basis of Celce-Murcia and Olshtain's (2000)

discourse processing frameworks and then some effective instructional methods are

suggested for discourse-based four skills instruction in second language classrooms. For

more effective pedagogical applications, the important two concepts (the interaction

between bottom-up and top-down processing and skills integration) are emphasized.
