Abstract

The present paper is to discuss several issues in the outcome research of

psychotherapy or counseling. The concept of effect size is discussed and meta-analytic methods are presented. Issues in establishing control group(s) and/or placebo group(s) are discussed in detail. Finally, several comparison studies which were to determine the different effects of different interventions are reviewed. The meta-analyses and comparison studies reviewed have

revealed that most of the psychotherapy and counseling are effective compared to the no-treatment clients, but it is still unclear if they are more effective than the placebo conditions.
