Abstract

Primarily the following aspects of the Romanization System of the Ministry of Education are examined: 1. Plosives and Affricates 2. ㅓ, ㅡ, and related vowels 3. Transcription of morphophonemic changes The MOE system of plosives and affricates is somewhat superior in distinctiveness on recognition level to those of McCune-Reischauer, Martin, and Lukoff. Arguments may be raised, however, on the basis of perceptual feelings, particularly those of English speakers. It would be necessary, therefore, to analyze the nature and the relative importance of the two aspects-i.e., distinctiveness on recognition level and aesthetic effects of the romanized representation. The MOE symbols for (eo) and (eu) tend to produce sounds that are far from the original Korean sounds. It is desirable, therefore, to change the symbols for these vowels, even at the risk of introducing a sort of diacritical mark. The representation of some syllable finals and morphophonemic changes ought to be systematized on the basis of (1) the easiness of romanization and (2) the recoverability of the Korean words from the romanization (written or spoken).
