Abstract
The recent new outlooks on error and error analysis' reflect changing views of second-language acquisition, which assume that the process of language acquisition is essentially the same for both first and second language learning, and that a second language learners errors are similar to those of· a child acquiring his first in that they are both systematic. Under these assumptions, this paper attempted to define the practical, and theoretical, uses of error analysis. For error analysis to be successful, it is suggested, (1) systematic errors should be distinguished from nonce errors, normal errors from redundant ones, and errors from mistakes or lapses, and (2) methods of distinguishing between them should be elaborated. Problems arising from the identification of covert errors and the determination of the gravity of errors were also discussed.
