Abstract
The aim of this study is to develop education programs for pupils' emotional development based on the concept of "emotional intelligence". Emotional intelligence, a subordinate component of "social intelligence" refers to the capability of examining the feelings of one' s self and others, and of reflecting the information gathered on one's thought and behavior. The study was performed in two steps. The first step was doing meta-analysis of previous studies on personal development education and emotional intelligence. The second was the attempt to develop the educational programs. During the second step, various kinds of materials relevant for developing emotional intelligence were selected. The duration of the program, the characteristics of the target group, and the school setting in which the program would be implemented were also geared for the maximum effect of the developmental program. The programs developed here were designed to facilitate the development of five areas of emotional intelligence: 1) perception, appraisal, and expression of emotion, 2) empathy with others, 3) emotional facilitation of thinking, 4) understanding and analyzing emotions, and 5) regulation of emotions to promote emotional and intellectual growth. For each area, a variety of activities and materials are provided for teachers and pupils use and join the programs. There are eleven types of activity in the programs, and times needed for each activity vary according to the type. The target group of the programs are elementary pupils and approximately 32 weeks are expected to be spent for the entire program.
