A Comparative Analysis of the Characteristics of the Mathematically Gifted Students

- This paper is designed to analyze characteristics of the mathematically gifted students in the Special Education Center for the Gifted in Seoul National University through a mathematics aptitude test and a problem solving test. This study shows that even though the gifted students generally possess the talent to think creatively and to grasp mathematical structure, they have a weak point in dealing with logic and proof seriously, and some of them do not have the positive attitude toward mathematics. The difference between the scientifically gifted and the mathematically gifted also are founded. Compared to the scientifically gifted, the mathematically gifted excel in their ability to analyze the mathematical structure. It may be some problems for the gifted to have the creativity just to push them into accelerated classes emphasizing simple computation skills without studying mathematics in greater depth and at a higher level of abstraction. On this point, this study suggests some ways in which accelerated and enriched programs should be designed to reflect those characteristics with a more deliberate plan.
