Abstract
This study is to understand modern Korean philosophy of education (KPE) in the scientific history of Korean education. In this context, I investicated it as follows: First, I refer to grope for KPE. In 1960s, it is obvious that one became aware of needs to formulate KPE. In addition, the Korean society for the study of philosophy of education treated the theory of ideas, of acceptance and methodology as a subjects of "the grope. of KPE" for 3 times from 150th (September, 1988) monthly meeting for reading papers. I read a treatise on a subject of the theory of ideas-centering around foundationism. In this treatise, I clarified hstorically how Korean scholars have felt and dealt with it since 1945 (Koreas Independence Day). Second, it is about to consider the stream of KPE. I mentioned scholars name who contributed and contribute now to our scientific field of philosophy of education. (PE) And I traced the genealogy of PE which are investigated by them. Third, it is related to the construction of democratic education. I looked into Oh Chun Seoks (1901~1987) achievements and contributions in PE. His opinion is as follows: 1) Koreanization of democracy, 2) Democratization of nationalism, 3) Humanization of modernization. It is a little change of three gists (democratization, modernization and Koreanization) in his work which are published in 1963. And he, too, proposed 6 essential points in "some suggestions to perform the guide post for desirable Korean education." i,e. 1) for the completion of regulate character, 2) for the growing the ability of self decision making, 3) for the developing active accommodation to the change, 4) for the production of identical consciousness of high value, 5) for the standing point to eternal growth, 6) for the participation to the creative world. Forth, it is connected with the research for Deweys PE. I inquired into Rim Han Youngs (1914~1986) works and scientific contributions. He leaves a lot of dissertations, 7 writings and 6 translations behind. And Korean Society for the Study of Education (KSSE) published a special edition of for his retirement under the age limit in 1979. It is a great payment of KSSEs respects for him. In that special edition, 3 related dissertations including that of Rims inserted. In his dissertation, the essence of his scholartic results , which is titled the Definition of John Deweys Philosophy of Education," he explained his great services for the study of Deweys PE and his own criticism against him, too. Fifth, it is about to the PE of Kichochuii (Foundationism). Awaring of historical needs to formulate the KPE, I gave name it as Kichochuii" in 1957, declared in 1966 and is studying academically for the more systematic works. I touched only upon 6 characters of Kichochuii as a limit of space. i. e. 1) a nature of comprehension, 2) of integration, 3) of dynamics, 4) of positiveness, 5) of universality and 6) of practicality. Kichochuii is widely known as a human shaping logic through a harmony of tradition and reformation: 3 ideas (that of time, freedom and order) and 6 concepts (that of culture, life, intelligence, character, cooperation and service) are constructed educational ideas and educational value system respectively. Sixth, I refer to the problems and prospects of KPE. I indicated 5 points for a preconsideration or precondition to formulate new KPE. i.e. 1) a research of scientific history of education or that of PE, 2) a research of educational classics as a basic study, 3) a problem of acceptance or adaptation of modern PE, 4) activation of study group, meetings for reading papers, and so on, 5) daring to represent new PE.
