Abstract
The relationship between the variations of the Tsushima Current at the entrance of the East Sea and those of oceanographic properties of the East Sea are examined. Data used in this study are coastal oceanographic observations of temperature, results of tidal observations, and serial oceanographic observations of the East Sea. Coastal surface temperature has high correlation with that of the Tsushima Current. With analysis of 100m horizontal temperature distributions, five types of the Tsushima Current are obtained. The time series in terms of these types has similar feature in the long period to the thermocline depth variations of the East Sea. The higher temperature of 208 line is, the closer to the coast the East Korea Warm Current is. The variations of sea level differences between Izuhara and Pusan, which implies the volume transport across the Korea Strait, has significant relationship with coastal sea level anomalies of the East Sea in Korea. These facts suggest that closer relationship exist between the variations of the Tsushima Current in Korea Strait and the variations of oceanographic properties of the East Sea.
