dc.description.abstractIn an attempt to shed light on the idea, character and type of the new university that we will establish in the future, I have made an approach from the aspects of educational history and educational philosophy. I have referred to the new university as the Educational University and explained the reason in three phases. The first phase deals with the historical development of the idea and type of the university. In this part I investigated how the idea and type of the university underwent the change from the university of ancient times to the modern university of which the universities in the United States are modeled after. The second phase is about the idea and conception of the Educational University. The new century should become the age of permanent peace that will bring permanent prosperity to mankind, and in order for this to be fulfilled, much emphasis should be placed on education as an enterprise of the whole mankind. So, I used the term the Educational University, and tried to establish the character of the new university. In summary the idea and conception of the new university should be stated with regard to the Educational University. The third phase is about the status and role of the college of education in the Educational University. In this part I criticized the present situation in which the college of education doesn't recognize its uniqueness and function because it is included with the view of pararrel colleges. At the same time, I attempted to establish pedagogy as the common goal of university society and the role of the college of education. Since I allotted most of this paper to this third phase, I chose the title of my summary to be "The Concept of the Educational University." The point of my argument can be stated as follows. From the viewpoint of the idea and type of the university, the university has developed through the process of the ethical university which represents ancient China, the theological university representative of the universities in the West during the medieval age, the philosophical university like those in the 19th century and the scientific university for which modern universities in the United States stand. Since the common aim of mankind in the future is to establish permanent peace, the role of education is critically important. I called the new age the educational centry, and under this premise I developed the idea and conception of the Educational University. Finally I discoursed upon the pedagogy of the Educational University and the status and role of the college of education. Here I criticized the college of education in Korea, and stated the pedagogy as a common goal of university society. My conclusion is that the college of education is the centripetal core of the Educational University. I tried to show the way how we can convert the modern universities which are in agony as multiversity into the university and develop them in a new dimension.-
