Inner consciousness『Gwandongilrok』『Myeongjuilrok』grief and regretambition to distinguish himself based on confucianismaloof and reclusive

This study discussed Kim Si-seup"s inner consciousness in his late years with focus on the contents of the poems in 『Gwandongilrok』 and 『Myeongjuilrok』 which were divided into three major parts. The two books above provide a look into his life after he restarted wandering around Gwandong region at the age of around fifty.

First, the study examined how much grief and regret he felt over himself who could not lead a settled life, living away from society. In the works lamenting over his fate to wander around, he repeatedly demonstrate extreme departures from his usual style, frequently expressing reckless and self-defensive feelings.

Second, the study explored how his ambition to distinguish himself based on the practical values of Confucianism and his strong aspiration to participate in society are reflected in his reminiscent, retrogressive poems at the time. The works which explicitly demonstrate his obsession to practical values and the attendant frustration starkly contrast with the works telling of his desire to transcend the mundane world.

Third, the study examined the works mentioned above, one of the major three parts, that show how much he yearned for an aloof and reclusive life free from all of secular obsessions, wished to roam the nation freely and sought to lead such life.

Various aspects of his inner consciousness and sentiments shown though each of the three parts is understandable when considering what he experienced. However, it can not be denied that they contain quite contradictory elements. This study tried to help to grasp Kim Si-seup"s inner consciousness and sentiments by classifying and explaining the inconsistent contents of the poems he wrote in his late years and shedding light on the parts that are related but also have contradictory aspects.
