서정주의 신라정신론에 대한 재론 - 윤리의식과 정치적 무의식 비판을 중심으로 -

Abstract

미당 서정주의 신라정신론(新羅精神論)은 1950-60년대 한국 현대시사에서 가장 논란을 불러일으킨 시론 중의 하나이지만 학술적 접근이 시도된 것은 비교적 최근의 일이다. 이는 신라정신론이 지닌 시대착오적 성격과 함께 후대의 적당한 계승자가 없었기 때문일 것이다. 김수영과 신통엽으로 이어지는 같은 시기의 참여시론은 시대의 변화, 시적 주체의 인식의 심화과정에 따라 부단히 자기변모를 거듭하면서 1970-80년대 민중시론이나 노동시론으로 확대 발전되었다. 김춘수의 무의미시론 역시 이승훈 같은 일련의 계승자들과 만나면서 1970-80년대 모더니즘 시(혹은 해체시)의 형성과 발전에 한 축을 형성하였다. 하지만 미당이 제기한 신라정신론은 적절한 계승자를 찾지 못한 채 슬그머니 문학사의 뒤편으로 사라지고 말았다. 그렇다고 해서 신라정신론의 시사적인 중요성이 반감되는 것은 아니다. 신라정신론은 미당의 시 창작 방법과 시 정신을 대표할 만한 시론이었다. 또한, 그것은 미당이란 한 개인의 울타리를 넘어 1950-60년대 신세대 시인이었던 박재삼·김관식 등에게 영향을 미쳐 전후 전통주의 시의 형성에 기여하였다.

This paper aims to investigate the poetics of Shilla-Spirit(新羅精神) in order to reveal its aesthetic strategy and its ideological limits together. Especially, I tried to analyze the ethical consciousness and political unconsciousness of the poetics of Shilla-Spirit, and to criticize its meaning not only in the political and cultural context of 1960s in Korea, but also in the existential context of poets private life.

Ethics of devotion as the death consciousness (which is) is inherent in the poetics of Shilla-Spirit. Midang discovered the ethics of devotion from the death of the mythical heroes in Shills. He regarded their belief in eternity, or the psychomancy between the living and the dying, as the most fundamental tradition consciousness to be transmitted to posterity. This ethics of devotion shows Midangs nationalistic view as the ideological basis of Shilla-Spirit. Originally, Midangs nationalistic view appeared in the pro-Japnese poetry which aestheticised the inforced death of colonial subject as the death for Japanese Emperor. In this way, Midang fell into the ethnic communitys ethics oppressing individual liberty. Especially, the implicit connection between nationalism of 1960s and the poetics of Shilla-Spirit was well revealed not only when Midang regarded Shilla-Spirit as the national leaders virtue, or the philosophy of managing the nation, but when Midang showed the fascistic and anti communistic bias during the debate with Kim Jonggil.
