『二十四詩品』과 18·19세기 朝鮮의 士大夫 文藝

Abstract

이 논문은 『二十四詩品』이 조선사회에 수용되어 어떻게 활용되었는가를 분석하고자 한다. 中國 詩學에서 중요한 위치를 차지하는 『二十四詩品』이 조선 후기, 특

히 19세기 士大夫 文藝의 전개와 긴밀한 관련을 맺는 점을 중시하여 논지를 전개하되 通時的인 방법으로 핵심적인 사실 위주로 서술한다. 다시 말해, 19세기를 중심으로 살펴보되 이 저작의 수용과 밀접한 관련을 맺는 16세기와 18세기의 상황을 집중하여 서술한다. 한편, 20세기 초반의 상황도 19세기의 그것과 밀접한 관련을 맺고 있으므로 19세기에 함께 묶어서 살펴본다.

『二十四詩品』은 시의 창작과 감상을 목적으로 한 저작이다. 저작의 성격이 그렇기에 그 수용과 활용도 일차적으로는 詩의 영역에 초점을 맞추어 분석하는 것이

당연히 옳다. 그러나 이 저작은 詩學의 범위를 넘어서 繪畵와 書藝, 印章의 영역, 나아가 삶의 태도의 영역까지 깊숙한 영향을 미쳤다. 시창작과 시론의 영역에만 머물러 이해한다면 오히려 이 저작이 지닌 전체적 실상과 가치를 축소시킨다. 따라서 이 논문에서는 사대부의 문예 전반에 걸친 영역으로 확대하여 분석하고자 한다.

『二十四詩品』을 전통시대 한국의 문예와 관련하여 살펴보려는 목적은 이 저작이 19세기 조선의 문예가 전개되는 향방과 밀접한 관련을 맺기 때문이다. 19세기에 문예가 전개되는 양상은 상당히 복잡하다. 그 가운데 漢陽을 중심으로 하여 발전한 시단의 동향이 가장 중요한 흐름이라고 할 수 있는데 이 시단에서 시학의 모델로 삼은 저작 가운데 하나가 바로 『二十四詩品』이었다. 19세기 시학의 전개를 이해하고자 할 때 이 저작은 빠트려서는 안 되는 비중을 차지한다.

With emphasis on the influences of the Twenty-Four Categories of Poetry (二十四詩品, TCP hereafter), compiled by Sigong Tu (司空圖, 837-908) of Tang China, upon Korean literature, literary criticism and arts, this paper examines the way in which the TCP was introduced and appreciated in Chosŏn Korea. Introduced to Korea in the 1500s, the TCP, the book of poetics which was then greatly influential in the realm of literary criticism in China, attracted a number of Korean readers. This paper employs a new perspective that the TCP heavily influenced not only Korean poetics but also painting, calligraphy, seals, and even the Korean mode of living. This view, not posited yet by either Chinese or Korean scholars, is helpful to better understand the values of the TCP in the larger context. This paper first looks at the way in which Yun Chunnyŏn (尹春年, 1514-1567) introduced the TCP to Korea in the 1500s and its meaning. It also examines the situation in which the TCP was widely circulated in the 1700s, focusing on the publication of the Book of Sigong Tus Literary Criticism (司空圖詩品帖), written by Yi Kwangsa (李匡師, 1705-1777) and painted by Chŏng Sŏn (鄭敾, 1676-1759). Focusing on the continuing reading boom of the TCP among intellectual circles in the 1800s, led by Sin Wi (申緯, 1769-1845) and Kim Chŏnghŭi (金正喜, 1786-1856), this paper also discusses the expanding influences of the TCP upon literature, painting, and the mode of living in various forms of art. In a sense, the developmental trend of literature and art in late Chosŏn Korea was closely related to the wide circulation of the TCP among Korean elites.
