*사가-/*사바-(희다, 붉다, 빛나다, 밝다) 계열 어휘의 어원에 대하여

Abstract

지금까지 고대국어 沙非(赤), 沙伏(赤), 所比(赤)의 어형 추정, 사 (蝦), 사비(曉), 새박(晨), 새(동쪽) 등에 대한 단편적인 언급 및 어원해석의 시도는 있었지만, 시가-(희다, 붉다, 빛나다, 밝다) 계열의 어휘를 종합적으로 다룬 글은 거의 없는 듯하다. 현대국어의 여러 방언에서 시가-(白·赤·光·明)에서 파생된 어휘를 적지 않게 찾아볼 수 있지만, 중앙 방언에선 거의 잊혀진 듯하다. 시가-(白·赤·光·明) 계열 어휘는 현대의 방언 자료들이 문헌에 나오는 어휘들보다 이른 시기

*siγa-~ *siβa->*saγa-~*saβa- 희다, 붉다, 빛나다, 밝다로 거슬러 올라갈 개연성이 있다고 보며, 이들이 국어 어휘에서 하나의 정연한 체계를 이루고 있음을 살펴보기로 한다.

The aim of this paper is to clarify the etymologies of the various words whose origins trace back to the etymon *siγa-~*siβa- and *saγa-~*saβa- to be white, red; to shine; to be bright.

First, based on an adjective sika- to be white and Jŏnnam dialectal form sikə- to be white as a base of derivation with various meanings we have analyzed the following derivatives, deverbal nouns and compund words, for example, sikali dandruff, scurf, sikəli, sɔsikəli a phenomenon observing sparkling of the sea usually at night, sikəli the noctiluca, sikəli-pul firefly, *siγuli＞siuli plum, MK. compound words sikïn-Čhy spinach, siu-soy pig iron into adjectival or verbal stem *sikal- to become white, *sikəl- to become shiny, bright, *sikul-＞siul- to become red, *sikïl-to become red and deverbal nominal suffix -i. The above-mentioned adjectival or verbal stems are finally to be analyzed into a base *sika- to be white, *sikə- to shine, to be bright, *siku- or *sikï- to be red and a deverbal verbal suffix -Vl, which usually functions as a medial verb in linguistic sources.

Based on internal reconstruction we have succeeded in reconstructing an earlier form, that is, a doublet *siγa-~*siβa- to be white, red; to shine; to be bright, as the etymon of the above-mentioned words. Supposing so-called i-breaking having happened at a doublet *siγa-~*siβa- in the Old Korean period we have tentatively reconstructed also another doublet *saγa-~*saβa- to be white, red; to shine; to be bright.

Based on sound-correspondence and semantic congruence we may maintain that OK. *saβi 沙非, 所比 red, *saβok 沙伏 red, MK. sa-βi shrimp, MK. intransitive verb :say-, sai-＞NK. sΛy-＞ModK. sἐ·:- to dawn, break; to become bright, MK. saypay daybreak, dawn, MK. saypak daybreak, dawn, MK. :say- to be bright of the compound word :say-pyəl＞s y-pyəl the morning star, Venus, MK. *saβi＞:say＞s Arundinella hirta, NK. prefix sΛy-＞ModK. sε- vivid, deep, intense, ModK. *saβi＞say＞sε east, ModK. *saβi-namu＞sεpi-namu Callicarpa mollis, Kyungnam dialect *saβi-ki＞sεpi-ki Miscanthus sinensis, and Chechu dialect *saβi-naŋ＞s pi-naŋ Rosa multiflora probably originated in a doublet *saγa-~*saβa- to be white, red; to shine; to be bright.
