外奎章閣에 소장되어 있었던 천문학 관련 도서

Abstract

1631년 鄭斗源은 明에서 서양문물을 가져왔다. 그 중에는 유럽에서 온 예수회 선교사들에 의해 작성된 네 권의 책과 한 편의 보고서가 있다. 그중에서 『治曆緣起』와 「西洋貢獻神威大銃疏」가 朝鮮의 外奎章閣에 소장되고 있었다. 전자는 1866년 프랑스 해군이 강화도를 침략했을 때 불타버렸고, 후자는 1791년 辛亥迫害 때 불태워졌다. 이러한 사실로부터, 外奎章閣에 소장되었던 모든 천문 도서들의 역사와 학술적 가치를 이해하기 위해 서지학적 연구를 수행하였다. 『治曆緣起』와 『籌算』은 『崇禎曆書』의 성립에 대한 연구에 귀중한 자료가 되었을 것이다. 18세기 肅宗本 『天象列次分野之圖』의 탁본 한 점은 1866년 프랑스 해군에 의해 약탈되어 현재는 프랑스 파리국립도서관에 소장되어 있다. 外奎章閣에는 또한 『欽敬閣營建儀軌』와 『報漏閣改修儀軌』가 있었다. 欽敬閣에는 玉漏가, 그리고 報漏閣에는 自擊漏가 설치되어 있었다. 두 물시계는 모두 世宗의 명에 따라 蔣英實에 의해 처음 만들어진 것들이다. 만일 두 의궤가 프랑스 해군에 의해 불타버리지 않고 남아 있었다면 이 두 걸작 물시계의 온전한 모습을 복원하는데 상당히 도움이 되었을 것이다. 그리고 유일본은 아니지만, 英祖가 작성한 세 점의 천문관련 御製文들, 관상감에서 발간되어 대중적으로 가장 널리 사용되었던 『天文類抄』와 『天機大要』가 프랑스군의 침입으로 불탔다. 이러한 조사 연구가 外奎章閣 도서들의 반환에 대해 갖는 의미와 추가 연구 대상에 대해 논의하였다. 外奎章閣에 소장되었다가 불탄 「西洋貢獻神威大銃疏」를 복원하는 의미로 그 역주를 부록하였다.

In 1631 A.D. the ambassador Chŏng Duwŏn (鄭斗源) brought the product of European civilization from the Ming (明) dynasty. Among them were four books and one report written in Chinese by European Jesuits. Two of them were found to have been housed in the External Branch of the Royal Library of the Chosôn dynasty (外奎章閣). They are Zhiliyuanqi (治曆緣起: History of the calendar reformation in the Chongzhen reign period) and Xiyang-Kongxian-Xinweidacong-xiao (西洋貢獻神威大銃疏: Report on the magical and powerful cannon tributed by European in Macao). The former were destroyed by fire during the French invasion of 1866 A.D., and the latter or the Cannon Report were destroyed during the persecution of 1791 A.D. in Korea. Stimulated by these facts, a bibliographical study of all the astronomical books and maps having been housed in the External Branch Library is made to understand their history and academic value. Zhiliyuanqi and Chousuan (籌算) would have been invaluable data to understand the formation history of Chongzhen lishu (崇禎曆書). A rubbing of Chŏnsang-yŏlcha-punyajido (天象列次分野之圖) stele duplicated in the King Sukchongs (肅宗) era of the 18th century was plundered by the French navy in 1866 A.D., and now housed in La Bibliothèque Nationale de France. The External Branch had housed the Ritual Report of Constructing the Respecting-Heaven Pavilion or Hŭmkyŏng-gak (欽敬閣營建儀軌) and the Ritual Report for Repairing the Time-Announcing Pavilion or Poru-gak (報漏閣改修儀軌). The former Pavilion housed the Automatically-Striking Clepsydra (Chakyŏk-ru or 自擊漏), and the latter Pavillion housed the Jade Clepsydra (Ong-ru or 玉漏). Both were engineered by Chang Yŏngsil (蔣英實) ordered by King Sejong the great (世宗大王). If the two Reports had not been destroyed by the French navy, they can give us invaluable data to restore the two masterpiece clepsydrae. Although not being unique, three manuscripts written by King Yŏngjo (英祖), Chŏnmunryucho (天文類抄) and Chŏngidaeyo (天機大要) were destroyed by fire during the French invasion in 1866 A.D. The meaning of this research in terms of restoring the collection of the External Branch Library is discussed. The detailed explicative translation of the Cannon Report is provided to contribute to the restoration of the collection of the External Branch of the Royal Library.
