南秉哲의 『推步續解』와 조선후기 서양천문학

Abstract

남병철의 『推步續解』는 케플러의 타원궤도설과 카시니의 관측치를 적용한 시헌력 계산법인 『曆象考成後編』 체계에 맞추어, 천문학 이론과 천체운동의 계산 과정을 해설한 책이다. 태양 운동, 달 운동, 월식, 일식, 항성의 이동 등 다섯 가지 항목에 대해 각각의 계산에 필요한 기본수치와 계산의 절차를 상세히 해설하였다. 이 책의 서술 방식은 기본적으로 『역상고성후편』을 따랐지만, 기준점인 曆元을 저술연대와 가까운 1860년으로 바꾸고 황도경사각을 『儀象考成續編』(관측기준 1834년)의 23도 27분을 적용하는 등 최신의 데이터를 적용하였다.

남병철의 『推步續解』는 19세기 중반 조선의 유학자가 도달한 천문학적 이해의 최고수준을 보여준다. 이 책에 제시된 논의에서는 18세기 중국의 천문학자이자 고증학자인 江永의 영향이 나타난다. 나아가 남병철의 천문학 연구는 乾嘉年間의 청조 고증학파의 학술적 경향과 연관되어 있는 것으로 보인다.

In this paper, I analyzed the astronomical knowledge presented in the book of Chubosokhae 推步續解 (A Follow-up Commentary on the Astronomical Calculation, 1862) by Nam Pyŏng-chŏl 南秉哲 (1817~1863). Nam was an outstanding scholar of Astronomy and Mathematics in 19th century Korea and his book above showed a high level of understanding of Western Astronomy, which was useful in issuing Western Calendar, Shixianli 時憲曆. Learning from the Lixiang kaocheng houbian 曆象考成後編 (Sequel to the Compendium of Observational and Computational Astronomy, 1742), Nam employed the Keplerian ecliptic orbit theory (橢圓說) and calculation method when he explained the calendrical calculation process in his book. In the study of Astronomical knowledge, Chiang Yung 江永 (1681~1762), a Chinese scholar of Evidential Studies, was Nams role model, and the description style and contents of Nams Chubosokhae was strongly influenced by Jings Tuibufajie 推步法解 (Commentary on Astronomical calculation). Referring frequently to Chiangs studies in astronomy, and Nam proposed his own arguments on calendrical issues in Chubosokhae.
