지율스님의 생태운동과 에코페미니즘

Abstract

지율스님의 천성산 개발 반대 운동과 도롱뇽을 원고로 하는 자연의 권리 소송은, 환경 훼손을 감수하고 진행하는 개발의 가치에 대해 사회 일반에게 첨예한 논쟁을 불러일으켰다. 그러나 그의 환경 운동이 생명의 존엄성과 생태계 보존의 중요성에 대해 한국 사회의 인식을 환기하는데 기여했다는 점은 부인할 수 없을 것이다. 흔히 그가 불교 승려이고 여성이라는 점에서 그의 생태관은 당연히 불교나 여성주의와 관련이 있을 것이라고 흔히 생각하지만 실질적 분석은 행해지지 않고 있다. 본 논문은 지율스님의 글과 행동에서 드러나는 그의 생태관을 분석하여, 불교와 여성이 실제로 그의 생태 사상의 두 주요 축이 되고 있음을 밝히고자 한다. 그는 환경과 생태를 모두 일종의 생명으로 본다. 이러한 생명들 간의 소통 부재가 현재의 생태 파괴를 가져왔으며 소통을 통해 생태적 감수성을 회복해야 한다고 주장한다. 그는 글과 사진을 중요한 소통의 수단으로 사용한다. 특히 그의 포토저널리즘은 무상하고 공하며 연기로 얽힌 우리의 삶의 파라독스를 미학적 감각으로 표현하고 있다. 자연은 침탈의 대상이 아니며 인간과 자연은 상호 존중하는 관계를 회복해야 한다. 그는 이것을 화엄불교 사상의 언어와 논리로서 설명한다. 화엄의 중중무진연기를 이해함으로써 세계와 내가 동체이며, 나와 다른 생명과의 평등성을 깨달을 수 있다. 그의 생태관은 자연계와 인간계 간의 평등한 관계의 회복을 촉구한다는 점에서, 여성과 남성간의 가부장적 지배관계와 자연과 인간 사이의 지배관계 사이의 관련성에 주목하는 에코 페미니즘의 원리와 공명하고 있다. This paper introduces and explores Jiyul Sunims efforts to protect nature and the environment in Korea, an undertaking necessitated by the widespread and rapid industrialization and growth in modern Korea. Although her efforts in fighting for nature have created a huge response in Korean society and have elicited many analyses of her protest movement, there has as of yet been no discussion of the strong Buddhist convictions that underlie her activism, particularly the Huayen doctrine of dependent causality. Her Green Resonance movement is intended to raise awareness and sensitivity about our own reciprocity of being, as it is inherently connected to nature. That is, we too are connected to nature, although we can become insensitive to that connection through a lack of communication. This broader vision of connection gestures also to a broader approach to communication, through channels other than language and media. The language of nature, for example, is especially expressed through visual presentations. Jiyul Sunims exceptionally visual presentations in photo journals and other digital media represent her holistic vision of the Buddhist world. Her activism offers an exceptional case study of the application of Buddhist ideas on nature and environmentalism, while also demonstrating a particular interpretation of eco-feminism drawn from Buddhist concepts.
