『여씨춘추』와 『예기』 ｢악기｣에서 음악은 천지의 조화[和]가 갖는 의미 비교

Abstract

『여씨춘추』 ｢대악｣과 『예기』 ｢악기｣는 모두 음악을 천지의 조화라고 하지만 그 함의는 다르다. 음악을 욕구의 대상으로 보는 『여씨춘추』에서 음악은 조화로운 소리로 감각 기관에 유쾌한 물리적 자극을 줘야 한 다. 음악의 물리적 성격에 주목하는 『여씨춘추』에서 천지의 조화인 음악은 천지의 물리적 기와 공명하여 천지의 원활한 운행에 기여하는 조화로운 소리로 볼 수 있다. 이와는 달리 음악을 교화 수단으로 보는 ｢악기｣에서 음악은 사회 조화에 도움이 되는 올바른 행동을 이끌어내는 도덕적 소리여야 한다. 음악의 윤리적 성격을 강조하는 ｢악기｣에서 천지의 조화인 음악은 인체의 도덕적인 기와 공명하여 천지의 조화에 비견할 만한 조화를 인간 사회에 이뤄내는 음악이라 할 수 있다. 음악은 조화 기능이 강조되며 구분된 질서를 추구하는 예와 결합돼 상보적 예악 개념이 제기되고, 이는 ｢악 기｣에서 천지의 질서와 조화로 인식된다. 이러한 ｢악기｣의 예악 개념은 조화 기능을 제기하며 음악을 예와 대등한 위치로 끌어올린 ｢악론｣의 시각과 음악의 조화를 천지의 조화로 확장시킨 『여씨춘추』의 시각과 관련시켜 이해해 볼 수 있다.

Music is compared to the harmony of Heaven and Earth in both the Dayue chapter of Lüshi chunqiu and the Yueji chapter of Liji, yet from different perspectives. Lüshi chunqiu mainly sees music as an object of desire that provides a pleasing physical stimulus. In this case, the physical properties of music are considered crucial; therefore, the cosmic harmony of music in the Dayue chapter could suggest the idea that music can contribute to cosmic harmony by its harmonious sound resonating with qi in the natural world. In contrast, from the viewpoint of the Yueji chapter, which emphasizes the ethical properties of music, music contributes to social harmony by its moral sound resonating with moral qi in the body. In this case, social harmony created by music is comparable to harmony in the natural world. From this perspective, the cosmic harmony of music in the Yueji chapter can be understood as a metaphorical expression that complements the effect of music in achieving social harmony. Because of its effect of creating harmony, musics status is equal to that of li , thus rendering the complementary concept of li and music in the Yuelun chapter, a concept that assumes cosmic significance in the Yueji chapter. This significance can be understood as a conjoined viewpoint of the Lüshi chunqiu, where music is perceived as the harmony of Heaven and Earth, and the Yuelun chapter, where music is considered to be part of a complementary pair with li.
