메를로-퐁티의 육화된 의식 －애매하고 모호한 인간 존재－

Abstract

본 논문에서 우리는 메를로-퐁티의 육화된 의식의 의미와 그것이 갖는 의미를 데카르트의 의식철학과 비교하면서 해명하고자 한다. 우리는 오늘날에도 여전히 미스테리한 현상으로 간주되는 환상지 현상을 통해 메를로-퐁티의 육화된 의식과 관련된 문제를 살펴보고자 한다. 메를로-퐁티는 데카르트의 순수한 사유로서의 코기토를 거부한다. 그는 불투명한 현상으로서의 게슈탈트를 제시하고, 의식과 대상 또는 의미와 질료가 순환적으로 형성된다는 것을 주장한다. 이러한 메를로-퐁티의 입장은 그가 말하는 의식의 육화 현상이 순수 생리적이거나 물리적인 상태에 있지 않다는 것을 의미한다. 환상지 환자가 특정 과거나 자신의 특정 세계에 고착되어 환상지 현상을 체험한다는 메를로-퐁티의 해명에서 알 수 있듯이, 우리의 의식은 순수 물리적이지 않은 자신의 세계에 육화되어 있다. 이러한 메를로-퐁티의 입장은 데카르트와 달리 전통적으로 독사(doxa)의 영역으로 치부된 일상적 체험을 복원하는 것을 의미한다. 데카르트의 의식철학이 우리의 일상적 체험을 순수 의식(정신)의 영역으로 환원한다면, 메를로-퐁티는 철학에서 배제된 일상적 체험을 자기 자리에 되돌려 놓으려 한다.

This article inquires into Merleau-Pontys concept of embodied consciousness in comparison with Cartesian philosophy of consciousness. I will elucidate what his concept of embodied consciousness implies, particularly regarding the problem of the phantom limb. To solve the problem of the phantom limb, Merleau-Ponty presents the Gestalt phenomenon in which consciousness and the object together form a circular relationship. The embodied phenomenon of consciousness that Merleau-Ponty understands in the Gestalt phenomenon does not fall under the Cartesian category as a mere physical or physiological phenomenon. It means that Merleau-Ponty restores the lived phenomenon as it appears to us, while Descartes reduces it to the domain of the pure mind.
