Abstract
(Lady Audleys Secret)
(Cvetkovich

(Helen Maldon)
(Lucy

(Showalter 1977, 165).
The so-called sensation novels of the 1860s often expose the Victorian hypocrisy
by raising the debate over Woman Question. A central feature in
Lady Audleys Secret, one of Mary Elizabeth Braddons sensation novels is
related to creating a female character who transgresses the prevailing Victorian
conventions and asserts her financial and social security. In a society
full of insatiable thirsts for a better life, most women were estranged from
satisfying the least desire to improve themselves and marriage was the only
path to womanly self-fulfillment. After failure of first marriage, however,
Lucy Audley, the heroine of Lady Audleys Secret, denies positioning herself
passively inside the Victorian domestic ideal that women should accept their
designated place under the males protection. Seemingly performing the role
of the ideal Victorian woman, she actively pursues her desire for riches and
status as most contemporary men do. Nevertheless, Lucy needs to relinquish
her original identity and reinvent herself in order to advance both financially
and socially unlike her male counterpart, for her aspirations are aggressive to
the masculine order of society.
Meanwhile, Braddons male characters also reveal a fraudulent duplicity,
which culminates when they diagnose Lucy as mad, expel and confine her to
a mental hospital in a foreign country. By presenting preposterous thoughts
and behaviors of the male characters, the author criticizes the sexually biased
view of the symptom, and more generally, the distorted gender dichotomy
of Victorian era. Consequently, Braddon proves that madness is the word
speaking for the devastating socioeconomic suffering of women under patriarchal
oppression as well as the label imputed to a woman who defies the assigned and stifling role circumscribed by male-dominated Victorian society
where women are prohibited from having an unregulated desire.
