동중서의 '마음'에 대한 연구

Abstract

현재 우리말에서 '마음(心)'이라는 용어는 종종'몸(身)'과 대비되어 사용되며, 영어로는 mind-body에 정확히 대응되는 것처럼 느껴진다. 그런데 중국 고대 문헌에서 心은 身과 대립항을 이루기보다는 身의 일부로서, 질적으로 다른 것이라기보다는 다만 다른 기능, 보다 정확히 말하자면 가장 중요한 기능을 담당하는 기관으로 이해되었다. 기본적으로 심장 혹은 심장이 있는 곳을 의미하는 이 心은 중국 고대의 문헌에서 그것 자체로 '나'라는 주체를 뜻하기도 하고, 인간의 본성이라는 의미를 내포하기도 한다. 무엇보다도 이 心에는 情感이라는 정서적인 기능 뿐 아니라 思慮라는 인식적인 기능이 있다고 이해되어 왔다. 이 점은 오히려 현대의 동아시아인들에게는 낯설게 되어 버렸지만, 晚明 시기 예수회 선교사들이 중국의 사인들과 함께 서양 서적들을 번역할 때 규정된 용어들 중 '腦囊'이라는 용어가 '心'을 대신하여 의식 및 기억을 담당하는 기관으로 정착되기 전까지, 사려하는 기관은 心이라 여겨졌던 것이다. 많은 중국철학 연구자들은 이러한 心이 유교 뿐 아니라 중국 전통철학의 범주들 중 가장 보편적이고 기본적인 범주라는데에 대체로 의견을 같이 한다. 또, 유교의 핵심을 심성론에서 찾는 많은 연구자들은 漢代의 유자들이 공맹 유학의 핵심인 심성론을 변질시켰다는 평가를 하곤 한다. Xin(心), often translated into 'mind-heart' is a major problematique in traditional Confucian discourses. In this paper, I tried to examine Dong Zhongshu's usage of Xin(心). Firstly, I explain that Dong Zhongshu, the typical Han Confucian scholar discussed the mind-heart(心) in the context of cosmology. Secondly, I pointed out that in Dong's theory of self cultivation, the mind-heart and the body could be transformed into each other. Dong said that there were two ways of self cultivation : cultivating the mind-heart(義心) and caring the body(義體), and he thought that the two could influence each other through the qi(氣). I also examine the usage of De(德) in Chunqiufanlu, and the five cardinal virtues(五常). benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and sincerity in the context of the Confucian theories on Wuxing(五行).
