Abstract

[Mario de Andrade was one of the founders of the Brazilian Modemism, which in the twenties invigorated the artistic and intellectual scene in Brazil. Musicologist, ethnographer, poet and storyteller, Mario de Andrade later broke-up with the Antropofago avant -garde movement to continue from their particular creative position finding the hallmarks of the Brazilian identity. Macunaima was published in 1928 and from that moment it became a controversial text, which reveals the heterogeneous nature of society and culture in Brazil. In this work we propose that the laziness(prequica) feature of the main character Macunaima, serves as the catalyst for the dispersed, contradictory, brittle characteristics that compose the heterogeneous quality of Brazilian identity, and at the same time, becomes the structure that defines the novel itself.]
