치카나들의 세 어머니와 산드라 시스네로스:『우먼 홀러링 크릭과 다른 이야기들』을 중심으로

Abstract

멕시코 여성이나 치카나들에게는 전통적으로 세 명의 여성 모델이 존재한다. 불가능하면서도 너무나 비현실적인 모델 과달루뻬 성모, 배신자이자 '칭가다'인 말린체, 배신당했으면서 수동적으로 우는 여성 요로나가 그들이다. 하지만 그들과 관련된 옛 이야기, 전설, 신화에서 대안적 가치를 발견한 치카나 페미니스트들이나 작가들은 그 속에 담긴 억압적이고 부정적인 함의를 전복시켜 그 존재들을 치카나 삼위로 재창조한다. 그 세 상징적 존재를 긍정적 역할 모델로 재창조하고 그 결과 모성애나 섹슈얼리티에 새로운 의미를 부여하는 것이다. 나아가 그들은 그 세 모델들을 (남성) 지배에 맞설 수 있도록 해주는 상징으로 자리매김한다. 산드라 시스네로스는 그 세 존재들과 관련된 전통적 이야기를 뒤집어놓음으로써 억압적인 사회 속에서도 보다 능동적인 인간이 되어 삶을 추구하도록 여성들을 자극하는 대표적인 치카나 작가다.「작은 기적」의 차요는 과달루빼 성모를 향한 자신의 비판을 중화시켜 과

달루뻬，자신의 문화 그리고 자아에 대한 새로운 관점을 얻고 있다.「멕시코인과는 결혼하지말거라」의 클레멘시아는 자신의 한계 상황에 맞서 싸우며 말린체와 요로나의 힘을 되살려내고 있다. 또한「우먼 흘러링 크릭」의 끌레오밀라스는 요로나의 목소리를 인내나 고통의 목소리가 아닌 해방이나 독립의 목소리로 듣고 있다. 결과적으로 시스네로스는 치차나들에게 세상을 변화시킬 수 있는 동기를 부여하려는 의도를 보여주고 있다.

Traditionally, Mexican American women or Chicanas have three female models: La Virgen de Guadalupe, the impossible and too unrealistic model; La Malinche, the traitor and la chingada; and La Llorona the betrayed, passive, and wailing woman. However, Chicana feminists and authors, who find alternative values in their stories, myths, and legends, subvert the oppressive or negative connotations associated with them and create a Chicana Trinity. By recreating the three symbolic figures as positive role models, they provide new meanings to maternity and sexuality. They position the legendary women as figures that inspire opposition to (male) domination. A Chicana writer, Sandra Cisneros, using the twisted or reversed constructions of the traditional versions, motivates Chicanas to

be more active women who can find a way to survive in the adverse society. In Little Miracles, Kept Promises", Chayo neutralizes her criticism toward La Virgen de Guadalupe and acquires a new vision of the goddess, her culture, and her being. ln Never Marry a Mexican", Clemencia struggles against her marginal state and revives the power of the La Malinche and La Llorona. Also, in Woman Hollering Creek", Cleófilas listens to La Lloronas voice not as a voice of endurance or pain but as a voice of liberation or independence. Therefore, as a writer, Cisneros intends to impulse Chicanas to transform the world.
