호적중초를 통해서 본 19~20세기 제주도 마을의 궨당관계

Abstract

본 연구에서 분석하고자 하는 호적중초는 제주도 서귀포시에 속한 한 마을의 호적중초이다. 이 마을에는 19세기 중엽인 1861년 호적중초를 시작으로 20세기 초인 1909년 호적중초까지 호적중초 12질이 보관 되어 있다. 아직까지 본격적으로 분석된 적이 없는 이 호적중초는 마을 형성 초기부터 한일합방 이전까지의 마을 사정을 담고 있는 자료로서 마을의 형성 과정, 발전 과정, 인구 구성, 인구 이동 등 인구통계학적 정보는 물론, 마을 구성원들의 혼인관계에 대한 정보를 담고 있어 궨당 분석을 위한 좋은 도구가 된다. 이 연구에서는 마을 형성 초기인 동치(同治) 3년(서기 1864년)의 호적중초를 분석의 대상으로 삼았다.

이 연구는 호적중초를 통해 19세기 말에서 20세기 초까지 제주도의 한 마을에서 궨당이 어떻게 구성되었으며 그것이 어떤 문화적 의미를 가지고 있었는지를 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 구체적인 연구 목적은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 문헌 자료로서 호적중초의 성격과 특징을 이해한다. 둘째, 마을 내 궨당관계의 중심에는 누가 있으며 그는 어떤 목적에서 궨당관계를 형성하고 활용하였는지를 이해한다. 셋째, 궨당관계가 마을 내 권력 관계에 미친 영향을 파악한다.

This study aims to understand Kwendang' which is one of the most important cultural elements of Jeju Islands. To achieve this aim, I apply Hojukjungcho' which is written materials including name, title, age, spouses and other demographic data of villagers.

Analyzing Hojukjungcho,' I have traced household size, family pattern, marriage network, age gap of spouses, etc. And I found strong kindred network, so called Kwendang,' which is made by descent and marriage. Kwendang has the role of power resources.

Most powerful family has most complicated and strong Kwendang' relation and marginal family has simple and weak Kwendang' relation. In this context Kwendang' is not only marriage relation but power resources which has the role of social positions and political alliances.
