자살에 관한 문화적 학습 및 재생산의 경로: 중국 농촌 여성의 사례

Abstract

중국 농촌 사회 내 여성 자살의 빈번함에 관해 사회과학적 시각에서 다양한 설명 혹은 해석이 가능할 것이다. 예컨대, 농촌 지역에 잔존하는 가부장적 성별 관계라든지, 개혁 개방 이후 농촌 여성의 변화된 성 역할 및 정체성, 정부의 경제 개혁으로 인한 도농 간의 격차나 자살을 저항의 수단으로 사용해 온 중국 문화의 특징, 심지어 여성의 우울증 및 기타 정신적 고통을 적절하게 치료하지 못하는 의료 시설의 낙후함 등등이 농촌 여성 자살을 빈번하게 만드는 사회문화적 요인으로서 논의될 수 있다. 그러나 본 논문에서는 이와 같은 농촌 여성이 처해 있는 복합적이고 다층적인 사회문화적 환경에 대해 논의하기보다는(이에 관해서는 Lee 2009 참조), 자살 행위가 단순히 예외적이고 일탈적인 행위가 아니라 특정한 문화적 의미를 가진 행위로서 세대를 거쳐 학습되고 재생산될 수 있다는 가정 아래, 그렇다면 구체적으로 어떠한 경로를 통해 자살에 관한 문화적 학습이 이루어지는가를 중국 농촌 여성의 사례를 통해 살펴보고자 한다.

How do women in rural China come to learn and reproduce suicide as a possible solution to certain situations though it is a taboo and strictly suppressed behavior in Chinese society? China has recently been singled out for its high rates of suicide, making suicide as one of the most important public health problems in China today.

In particular, Chinese women have shown much higher suicide rates than men, primarily due to a plethora of female suicides in rural China. The researcher's anthropological fieldwork study in Hebei villages suggests that the frequency of female suicidal behavior in some rural areas can be even higher than reported statistical data.

In conclusion, the researcher proposes that instead of being simply regarded as a corporeal entity with symbolic meaning, an effect of discourse, or a site of cultural inscription, anthropologists should consider the body as the starting point to study culture and self because on the center of cultural learning and reproduction lies the body.
