귀신말 또는 한국어의 피그 라틴(Pig Latin)

Abstract

언어가 정보 전달만을 목적으로 하는 단순한 의사소통의 도구가 아니라는 사실은 언어의 기능에 관한 다양한 논의들을 통해 이미 잘 알려진 바 있다. 언어를 정보 전달을 목적으로 하는 의사소통의 수단으로만 사용한다면 인간의 삶은 상당히 무미건조할 것이다. 다행히 인간은 언어를 의사소통 이외에 다른 용도로 사용할 수 있는 능력을 가지고 있다. 그리하여 인간은 다양한 문학의 장르들을 만들어 냈을 뿐만 아니라 코미디와 같은 연행, 끝말잇기나 낱말 맞추기 등과 같은 말을 이용 한 놀이에 이르기까지 일상생활을 훨씬 더 풍요롭게 하는 다양한 언어적인 장치들을 발달시켜왔다.

하지만 의사소통의 목적 이외에 사용되는 이러한 언어적 현상에 대한 연구는 언어 그 자체에 대한 연구나 의사소통의 능력에 대한 연구들에 비하면 상대적으로 빈약하다. 그 이유는 아마도 고답적인 담론을 주로 하는 학문의 영역에서 말장난으로 여겨지는 이러한 언어적인 현상이 적절한 연구 대상으로는 여겨지지 않았기 때문일 수도 있을 것이며(Chiaro 1992: 1; Sherzer 2002: 7-8), 일상적인 말하기의 장르와 긴밀한 관계 속에 융합되어있기 때문에 독립적인 장르로 파악하는 것이 어렵거나, 혹은 일부 화자들에 의해 배타적으로 사용되기 때문에 그러한 언어적 행위를 발견하는 것 자체가 어렵기 때문일 수도 있을 것이다.

This paper analyzes the structure and function of Ghost Speech, a speech play performed in Korea. It is regarded as a speech play equivalent to Pig Latin used in the English-speaking areas since it has some common features in its structure and function with Pig Latin. For example, it is made by the insertion of meaningless sounds in regular words, and used as a secret language.

There are also some differences peculiar to Ghost Speech. First of all, it is exclusively used among the speakers of younger generation. Most of the speakers are teenagers, and the speech is not used among the speakers older than twenty. Secondly, it lasts very short term period. Roughly estimated, it has been used for three to six months in a speech community. Thirdly, it is highly gender-oriented. The speech is used exclusively by women speakers.

In its functional aspect, the speech is used just for amusement, and also as means showing off a speaker's covert prestige. Therefore, it can be said that the speech is (a) weapon of the weak against the strong as well as (a) break from the serious stuff of life.
