사진인류학의 연구방법론

Abstract

본 논문은 인류학 분야의 사진연구의 주요 연구방법론을 검토하고 소개하는 데 목적이 있다. 국내외를 막론하고 사진인류학의 연구방법론이나 연구결과를 전체적으로 다룬 단행본이나 연구가 전무한 실정이다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 사진에 대한 기존의 인류학적인 연구들을 전반적으로 살펴보고, 그 연구의 유형과 내용을 정리하고자 한다.

사진과 관련된 인류학 분야의 논의는 대체로 역사적 사진(historical photograph)에 대한 연구, 민족지 사진(ethnographic photography)과 이에 관한 연구, 사진문화(culture of photography)에 대한 연구, 그리고 사진유도기법(photo-elicitation)의 4가지 분야로 나누어 볼 수 있다. 이처럼 네 가지의 연구유형의 내용과 방법론은 성격상 다소 차이점이 있지만, 본 논문에서는 인류학과 관련된 사진연구, 즉 사진인류학(anthropology of photography)이라는 큰 틀에서 이들을 함께 논의하고자 한다. 사진인류학의 연구방법론을 네 가지 유형으로 나눈 것은 필자의 구분에 의한 것이지만, 실제로 인류학에서 사진과 관련된 연구를 전체적으로 살펴보면 이 네 가지 분야의 연구가 주된 형태를 이루고 있음을 알 수 있다. 사진인류학은 넓은 의미의 시각/영상인류학'(visual anthropology)의 한 분과로 다룰 수 있기 때문에 사진인류학의 방법은 시각/영상인류학의 이론을 기초로 논의되기도 하고 때론 중첩되기도 한다. 본 논문에서는 네 가지 유형의 연구와 관련된 모든 연구들을 총망라하기보다는 보다 이론적 배경이 뚜렷한, 대표적인 연구를 집중적으로 살펴보기로 한다.

This paper reviews anthropological literature relating to the anthropological study of photographs. It looks at a methodological issues involved in studying photographs as anthropological investigation and classifies its methodologies into four categories.

First, it looks at historical photography' as anthropological documents and explores into three kinds of studies in relation to it: photography and anthropometry, anthropological imagemakers (photographers), and photographic image and representation. Second, it deals with photographic works of Bronislaw Malinowski, Franz Boas and Magaret Mead. The anthropological investigation into various photographic cultures is third issue. Finally, the paper introduces photo-elicitation' and elucidates its history, methodology and research samples in the fields of anthropology and sociology.
