한국사회의 동물위령제를 통해 본 동물의 죽음에 대한 사회적 인식의 변화

Abstract

최근 신문이나 텔레비전과 같은 대중매체에서는 동물과 관련된 보도가 점점 늘어나고 있다. 애완동물의 인기 상승과 동물보호운동의 전개, 그리고 동물원동물이나 야생동물에 대한 관심이 높아지면서 사람들이 여러 동물들과 친숙해진 결과, 동물의 죽음에 대한 관심 특히 그 죽음을 아쉬워하는 경향도 고조되고 있다. 1990년대 말부터 도시부를 중심으로 등장한 애완동물의 장례 서비스나 동물학대 반대 운동으로 행해지는 동물천도재 등과 같은 사회 현상들이 이런 움직임을 보여 주는 대표적인 예이다.

본고에서는 한국사회의 동물관의 변화를 엿볼 수 있는 동물위령제를 고찰해보겠다. 이를 통해 그것이 한국 문화의 핵심을 내포한 문화의 비밀을 푸는 열쇠가 아니라, 현대를 살아가는 생활자들의 세상에 대한 현실적인 의식을 나타내는 풍습임을 밝혀보겠다. 즉, 한국의 동물위령제는 한국사람들의 일상생활의 변화를 나타내는 현상으로 인식할 수 있으며, 그 변화과정이 지속적으로 진행하고 있다는 것을 보여 주는 예가 된다. 본문에서는 동물위령제란 무엇인지, 그리고 현대 한국사회의 어떤 사회문화적 문맥 안에서 근년에 주목을 끌고 보급되게 되었는지를 차례대로 살펴보고자 한다.

Folklore is a cultural expression of the way people perceive their living environment, and springs forth from processes by which hard to grasp facts are transformed into acceptable and understandable cultural forms. Memorial services for animals in Korea have not received academic attention up to the present, but they comprise a living cultural phenomenon that is widely observed in animal testing laboratories, zoos, Buddhist temples, and animal-related companies for animals that were killed for human purposes. In this research, I examined the changes that have occurred in Koreans' views of animals and animal death in the last twenty years through analysis of the way memorial services for animals were introduced and rediscovered in Korea.
