Abstract
The present status of biochemical education in
medical field of Korea was analyzed in the aspect of
its clinical application by questionaire study from
115 medical doctors who had finished regular medical
,courses in Korea. The definition of clinical biochemistry
in the present study was the part of biochemistry
which could be applied for clinical diagnosis and
theraphy as well as for researches on chemical path.
ogenesis. From the medical doctors in the present
.study, the following opinions could be summarized:
1. The satisfying rate of the doctors on their own biochemical education was 3% and their view on its
clinical and reseach application was very disappointing.
The most probable reason for such a low rate
of application was the lack of biochemical knowledge
rather than the shortage of equipments or research
funds.
2. The retention rate of biochemical knowledge on
human metabolic diseases was 58% and the rate
showed the decreasing tendency after graduation of
medical school.
3. The positive rate of the experienced biochemical
equipments and laboratory items was also very low,
less than 5%. The positive rate of holding concepts
on quality control for laboratory data was only 20%,
but the rate was contrastingly improved in the staff
class.
4. Suggestions by the medical doctors in the view
of improving clinical application of biochemistry
were as follows; to educate biochemistry not only at
basic course but also at clinical course, to prolong
the duration of biochemical education, to use audiovisual
educational aids, to enrich the manpower and
equipments, to emphasize biochemical changes in
diseases rather than principles of biochemical processes,
to give the laboratory experiences for contrast
study between normal and pathological specimens and
to evaluate the educational achievements by discussion
rather than by report or paper examinations.
