한국공예시범소와 서울대학교 미술대학

Abstract

The Korea Handcraft Demonstration Center(KHDC) was established in 1958 by the ICA Fund, which provided assistance to undeveloped countries from the U.S. government. Its purpose was to promote the exportation of Korean handcrafts and the development of craftsmen in Korea. Smith, Scherr & McDermott Industrial Design, the service contractor, expanded its fields to promote the handcraft industry and export outlets, consignment sales, exhibit tours, and craftsman education for a period of 28 months. They have designed various handcraft goods for export for two years, but most items are simply a reinterpretation of Korean tradition in terms of Western thought. KHDCs Acts received a good grade from the U.S. Government, but its effects were less effective and just one–off thing. However, it had clear effects in the field of education. They created the opportunity to transplant American design education methodology into Korea by establishing an education program in Seoul National University and Hong–ik University, through a professor training program in U.S. universities. KHDC was closed in January 1960 and was transferred into Seoul National University. The members who had program training in America became professors in Seoul National University. It changed the education system from a Japanese style to an American style. e KHDCs facilities were granted to the College of Fine Arts, which brought the chance to improve the quality of design education. Ultimately, KHDC established the ground for a Korea Design Center at Seoul National University in 1966. KHDC was a putative role model of Korea Design Center because there was no country that had established a state–run design organization by that time.

본 연구에서는 1950년대 후반, 한국사회에 근대 디자인 시스 템을 도입하는 데 중요한 역할을 했던 미국의 ICA(국제협력 처)와 한국을 담당했던 디자인회사인 스미스 셔 맥도모트 (Smith, Scherr & McDermott Industrial design: 이하 SSM) 사, 또 그들이 한국 내에 설치했던 한국공예시범소(Korea Handicraft Demonstration Center)의 활동을 정리하고, 서울 대학교 미술대학과 한국공예시범소의 상관관계를 살펴보고 자 한다. 한국공예시범소는 한국 근대공예디자인계의 기틀을 마련하는 데 지대한 공헌을 하였음에도 불구하고, 그 활동시기가 근현대사에서 가장 혼 란한 시기에 놓여있음으로 인해, 객관적인 활동내용이나 연구자료들이 무엇하나 제대 로 남아 있지 못한 상황이다. 공예시범소에 관해 연구된 내용을 찾아보면 정경원이나 박암종3의 연구에서 50년대의 한국디자인역사를 정리하는 가운데 일정부분을 할애하 고 있는 정도이며, 당시 공예연구소의 연구원으로 일했던 민철홍이나, 권순형 등 몇몇 사람들의 파편화된 증언으로 활동내용이 간간이 소개되고 있을 뿐이다. 앞서의 연구에 서는 한국공예시범소의 활동이 실제 이상으로 과장되거나, 확대되어 서술되는 경향을 보이고 있지만, 아무런 증빙 자료가 남아 있지 않은 관계로 그 사실관계 파악에도 어려 움을 겪고 있다. 한국공예시범소의 활동과 성과가 공정한 역사적 평가를 받기 위해 현 재 상황에서 가장 절실한 과제는 우선 객관적인 자료를 확보하는 일이다. 객관화된 데 이터가 축적되어야 이를 바탕으로 다양한 평가가 가능하기 때문이다.
