미술로서의 디자인 : 이순석의 1946–1959년 응용미술교육

Abstract

In the 1940s and 1950s, the education of applied art at Seoul National University (SNU) was under the influence of Sun–Seok Lee who was the only full–time professor in the applied art department. Ideas of do–an (design), craft, decoration, fine art and applied art that he had learned during his studies in Japan affected the contents of applied art education in the early days. Those ideas being transplanted from the West were inserted into the East Asian sign system in the modern age. They were constituted as translated terms whose signifiers were established first, and then the meanings (signifieds) were filled in later. Those vague terms were poured into the modern age of Korea contemporaneously. The superimposition and coexistence of meanings made signifiers all the more empty. Since then, new hierarchies rather than proper meanings have been filled in those empty spaces. In Western culture, the concept of fine art and the experience of modern education could hold prominent positions. Through the intimacy with Western missionaries in his young age and the experience of his studying at Tokyo Art School, Sun–Seok Lee acquired multilayered meanings of translated terms and the new hierarchies in them, which influenced the education of applied art in those days.

이순석은 한국 현대 공예와 디자인의 선구자로 불린다. 일본 동경미술학교 도안과를 졸업하고, 1931년 우리나라 최초의 디자인 개인전을 개최했으며, 1946년 역시 한국 최초로 도안과(응용미술과)를 설치한 서울대학교 미술대학의 교수로서 초창기 응용미술교육의 기틀을 잡았다. 국전과 상공미전의 심사위원직을 장기간 역임했고, 퇴직 후 1974년 대한민국 예술원의 회원이 되었으며, 서울시문화상, 대한민국예술원상 등을 수상했다. 이러한 화려한 이력과 업적으로 보았을 때, 이순석은 백태호의 말대로 우리나라 디자인과 공예의 발전역사상 절대적인 비중을 점유하는 분으로 칭송받을 만하다. 그런데 공예 · 디자인 분야의 교육가이자 행정가 또 공예가로서 선구적인 역할을 한 이순석에 대한 후대의 연구는 극소수에 불과하다. 또한, 그나마 몇 안 되는 연구결과물조차도 공예 · 디자인 이론의 관점이라기보다는 미술사적인 접근법을 통해 이순석의 작품세계와 작가적 영향력을 파고든 경우가 대부분 이어서, 그의 생애와 행적 안에 녹아 있는 사회적 의미를 제대로 파악하지 못했다고 할 수 있다. 그러한 맥락에서 이 글은 이순석의 작가적 역량보다, 교육가로서 그가 실시한 응용미술교육의 특징을 살펴 당시는 물론 오늘날 공예 · 디자인 분야에 미친 영향을 살펴보고자 한다. 당대 그의 화려한 이력과 후대 연구자들의 무관심이 대조를 이루듯, 교육자로서 이순석도 양극단의 평가를 받는다. 한편으로는, 서울대학교 미술대학의 설립에 관여하면서 응용미술 분야를 하나의 독립된 전공으로 설치하였고, 그 교육프로그램의 틀을 구축한 인물로 칭송받는다. 이후 한국의 많은 대학들이 서울대학의 체제를 모방했다는 점에서, 그 영향력이 지대했음에는 의심의 여지가 없다. 그러나 다른 한편으로 이순석은 일본의 응용미술 교육체제를 해방 후 한국에 그대로 적용시켜, 한국적 제도 성립의 가능성을 없애버린 인물로 비난받기도 한다. 자신이 일본에서 받은 교육제도와 개념을 그대로 이식했을 뿐, 한국의 사정과 정황에 적합한 혹은 미래지향적인 교육체계를 만들지 못했다는 비난인 것이다.
