벨의 우주선 사고실험과 시공간에 대한 동역학적 관점의 비판

Abstract

존 스튜어트 벨은 드완－베란이 고안한 특수상대성이론과 관련된 우주선 사고실험을 통해 피츠제럴드 수축이 좌표계 사이의 변환에 그치는 것이 아니라 실제로 일어나는 물리적 과정임을 강조했다. 팀 모들린은 벨의 사고실험을 이용하여 특수상대성이론에서 시계와 막대자가 하는 역할을 논의하면서 로렌츠 수축에 대한 새로운 해석을 제안했다. 하비 브라운, 로버트 디사 등은 상대성이론을 시공간에 대한 논의로 보는 주된 해석에 대항하여 동역학적 관점이라 부르는 접근을 제시했다. 이 논문은 벨의 우주선 사고실험을 상세하게 고찰하고, 이와 관련된 벨의 설명과 모들린의 논의가 동역학적 관점을 통해 가장 적절하게 이해할 수 있음을 보인 뒤, 동역학적 관점이 지니는 문제점들을 비판적으로 논의하고, 이를 토대로 벨의 논의는 하나의 대안으로 수용할 수 있는 반면, 이와 관련된 모들린의 제안은 부적절함을 주장할 것이다.

By investigating Bells spaceship argument, I discuss the significance and the limitation of the alternative interpretations of the theory of relativity. John S Bell discussed the solution of the spaceship Gedankenexperiment, which was originally proposed by Edmond M Dewan and Michael J Beran. Bell emphasized that FitzGerald contraction is not an apparent effect due to the transformation of the reference frame, but a real physical process. I clarify the spaceship argument using the Minkowski spacetime diagram and explicitly show that the thread in the argument breaks in the both inertial frames, but with different reasons. Tim Maudlin proposed to distinguish physical Lorentz contraction from coordinate-based Lorentz contraction, when he accounted for Bells spaceship argument. I show that Bells explanation and Maudlins proposal can be understood from the viewpoint of the Dynamical Perspective, proposed by Harvey Brown and Robert DiSalle and advocated by Yang Kyoung-Eun. By critically examining several aspects of the Dynamical Perspective, I argue that Maudlins distinction of two kinds of Lorentz transformation is inappropriate, while Bells approach is legitimate. Bells spaceship argument gives a good opportunity for discussing the pros and cons of the alternative interpretations of the theory of relativity, such as Einsteins original idea, Minkowskis spacetime-centered view and Lorentzs dynamical point of view.
