스페인 15세기 알레고리의 사실주의 경향

Abstract

15세기를 중심으로 중세스페인어로 기록된 알레고리 서사문학은 다음과 같은 두 가지 특징적인 흐름으로 요약될 수 있다. 첫째, 의인화된 철학적·종교적 개념들 간의 다양한 관계 설정과 대화를 토대로 이미 비시고도시대 이전부터 전승되던 전통적인 이베리아반도의 서사문체가 지속적으로 전승된다는 점이다. 둘째는, 스페인 15세기 알레고리는 비현실적인 비유 체계로 짜인 배경 묘사 속에 동시대 인물이나 사건을 자주 언급하며 서사작품의 사실성을 부각시키는 독특한 문체를 실험한다. 예를 들어, 미셀 프란시스꼬 임뻬리알의 「후안2세에게 바치는 글(1405), 산띠야나후작의 『뽄사의 희극』(1435), 후안 데 메나의 『운명의 미로』(1444), 후안 델 엔시나의 「명성의 승리」(1492) 등과 같은 일부 작품만 보아도 그 이전의 알레고리 픽션과는 달리 현실적 요소를 직접적으로 묘사·평가하고 있다는 점에서 확연한 차이를 발견할 수 있다. 그렇다면 15세기 알레고리 작품은 스페인 중세문학 내부에서 지속적으로 전승된 전통적인 알레고리 서사작품(예컨대 「사랑의 논증」이나 「영혼과 육체의 논쟁」등)에 비해 역사적 현실을 어떤 구체적인 방식으로 작품에 투영하고 있는가? 또한, 이 15세기 새로운 알레고리 문체가 스페인 문학사에서 보여주는 의의가 무엇인가? 이 두 가지 질문은 본고의 논지 전개에 있어 기본적인 초점이 된다.

Fifteenth century Castilian allegory is characterized by its stylistic

duality. First, it encompasses the traditional narrativemethod, consisting primarily

of various philosophical and religious concepts of personification. Second, it

tends to incorporate contemporary historical characters and incidents into

allegorical visions. These features are evident in such works as the Decir al

nacimiento de Juan II (Micer Francisco Imperial, 1405), theComedieta de Ponza

(Marqués de Santillana, 1435), the Laberinto de Fortuna (Juan de Mena, 1444)

and the Triunfo de Fama (Juan del Encina, 1492). However, few studies have

compared the particular features of these quattrocentist narrative poems with

the traditional allegory composed in Castile during the late Middle Ages (i.e.

Razón de amor; Disputa del alma y el cuerpo; María y Elena). Moreover,

little is known about the elements that constitute the current fifteenth century

Spanish allegorical narrative. This study attempts to address these issues.
