The author inquires into the semantic functions of both denominal and deverbal modifications in the Korean language.
Three morphemes [∮, - ŭi, - s] of denominal modification are recognized. Their semantic functions are divided into 14 ways. Because ambiguity arises necessarily due to the fact that three morphemes function in 14 different ways, only context can tell us the proper interpretation of any denominal modification.
Two morphemes [-n, -I] of deverbal modifications are recognized as the ultimate final endings. Their semantic functions are tentatively characterized from the point of view of the speaker's epistemic modality; (-n) is given the semantic function of [ + decisive] or perfective mood, and (-1) is given that of [-decisive] or imperfective mood.
