Abstract
This paper assumes that Korean has two types of empty category (=EC); one is of ‘syntactic’ EC, and the other of ‘stylistic’ EC. The content of the former category is syntactically determined by its antecedent or the predicate, and that of the latter is stylistically defined by the preceding context. This distinction is not crucial, but serves to restrict the scope of our discussion. According to the LF interpretation in the spirit of Huang (1984) which postulates a zero topic (or operator) binding EC in discourse-related deficient sentences, these two types of EC could be qualified as of the same nature. This means that Huang’s solution can be extended to cover the instances of ‘intentional’ EC that occurs in relation to the speaker’s presupposition at the moment of utterance.
