Abstract
The main thesis of th is paper is that the law of conservation operates in human language in that linguistic elements tend to have their inherent quality conserved over a fairly long stretch of time. For example, deleted linguistic elements tend to leave behind their traces, which are generally proportionate to their original quality. Although our thesis is validated with examples from English only, we assume that the law of conservation is a universal linguistic tendency.
