Abstract

This paper reports the developmental pattern generally observed in Korean-speaking childrens acquisition of negation. Children begin to produce negative expressions such as silh-, eps-, ani-, or an tway as early as 1;7, but they do not produce the long-form negation V-ci a ηh- until 3; 3. Korean data seem not inconsistent with Peas (1980) prediction made on the basis of cognÌtìve complexity that the negative expression expressing rejection should appear first, followed by that for nonexistence, with denial being expressed last.
Some children sometimes produce errors in matching the form and function of negation, presumably because they have not acquired a sub-rule required for the appropriate use of negation. They also produce Neg Placement errors in which the Neg morpheme an or mos immediately precedes the D-Structure object of the verb, in addition to the correct form in whích Neg precedes the verb. The noμon of unaccusativity is utilized to account for the phenomenon.
